Baptism
The word “baptism” means to “apply water for the purpose of washing or cleansing”. In the natural world, water is often associated with cleansing. Christian baptism is a spiritual washing using ordinary water and the Word of God. It is a special, sacred cleaning that God has provided for his church. “...Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless” (Ephesians 5:26-27). According to the book of Romans, we are baptized into the death of Christ.
Christian baptism is meant for “all nations”. God does not discriminate in any way, either by race, gender, or age. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”. We baptize people of all ages just as it has been practiced throughout the centuries beginning with the early Christian church.
Christian baptism is directly associated with salvation and spiritual rebirth in Christ. Titus 3:5 says, “He (God) saved us not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Some define baptism as a human work or covenant they are making with God. However, this is not possible since we are saved by God’s grace, not by our works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is God’s work of spiritual washing upon us and we are the recipients of his mercy, grace and cleansing in Christ.
Since the word baptize simply means to apply water for the purpose of washing and the Bible nowhere dictates the manner in which water is to be applied for this spiritual cleansing, we offer baptism by sprinkling or pouring water on the head of the person being baptized. Whether or not baptism is administered by immersion, sprinkling, or pouring is not relevant. What is relevant is that water is used in connection with the Word of God.
Christian baptism is important. Jesus said, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:15-16).
